Sanding and staining table

Do you have a table that has already been treated and would you like to treat it with Osmo TopOil to create a different look? Or do you have an untreated table that has many stains and needs to be treated? Then it is advisable to sand the table first before treating it.

Sanding the table

Start with grit 40; this is a coarse grit and removes the old treatment. Then sand with grit 80; this reduces all scratches left by grit 40. Finish with grit 120; this ensures the wood becomes smooth for treatment. Do not finish with a grit that is too fine, as this prevents the Osmo from being absorbed properly.

After sanding the table bare, it can be treated with a TopOil of your choice. For tropical hardwoods such as Teak, Acacia, and Wenge, these wood types can only be treated with TopOil 3028. If you would prefer to apply a color to the wood, it is advisable to test this thoroughly beforehand.

Varnishing or staining a table

Stains and varnishes are two terms for treating wood. With a varnish, a synthetic layer is applied that lies on the wood. Stains are often water-based and create a transparent (colored) layer.

All products from Osmo Netherlands are based on oil and wax. This creates a beautiful, natural oil look with a protective layer. Osmo TopOil is highly suitable for treating wooden tables. This product bears the Food Safe quality mark. This means that you can eat directly from the table; the product does not soak into the food.

Staining an oak table

Do you have a table made of beech, pine, or oak? Then it can be treated with any TopOil of your choice. If you want to create an untreated look, you can use Osmo TopOil 3068 Natural. Prefer a colorless variant? Then go for TopOil 3028 or 3058; these variants color the wood as if it has been wetted. This makes it slightly darker; we call this a wet-look effect. Additionally, four other color variants are available.

How to stain a table?

1. Shake the product well for 2 minutes. After opening the can, the Oil and Wax have separated.

2. Apply the first coat of Table Stain to the new or sanded wood using a white pad, lint-free cloth, or brush, and then buff it out with a white pad. Do this along the grain.

3. Within 20 minutes, buff the Table Stain dry with the fleece pad or lint-free cloth. Do this along the grain as well. This ensures that not too much product is applied.
4. Errors that occurred during application can be corrected on the wet surface up to 30 minutes after application. Think of roller marks or brush hairs.
5. The drying of the first coat takes approximately 8-10 hours (at 23 degrees and 50% relative humidity). At lower temperatures or higher humidity, drying takes longer. Good ventilation must be ensured at all times. Therefore, make sure that windows and doors are open.
6. Apply the second, third, and even fourth coat in the same way as the first coat.
7. The drying time for the Table Stain is approximately 8-10 hours.

If you are going to polish the surface, it is important to apply 3 to 4 coats. This is to adequately protect the surface against moisture, etc.

Maintaining a wooden table
To enjoy an Osmo-treated table for as long as possible, it is advisable to clean and maintain it occasionally. This can be done with the handy Spray Cleaner. This is a cleaning agent that can be sprayed directly onto the wooden table and subsequently wiped clean with a cloth.

When the table develops signs of wear, the surface can be treated with the Liquid Maintenance Wax. This product is also available in a spray variant. This makes applying the Maintenance Wax easier. You spray the product onto the wooden table and then polish it over the worn areas. Allow the Maintenance Wax to dry for approximately 40 minutes to an hour. Afterward, the worn areas will have disappeared, and the oak table is ready for use again.
